SWEETWATER (WATE) - A Sweetwater High School teacher was suspended after slapping a 17-year-old student at school.

Sweetwater High School Principal David Watts said Priscilla Shadden has been suspended while the investigation is underway.

The father of Bradley Butts, 17, said he was outraged that he learned about the incident through Facebook instead of by the school directly.

"It shocked me," Antonio Butts said. "I couldn't believe she put her hands on him. My boy went to the office for being assaulted by a teacher. They should have contacted me. I shouldn't have to hear this over Facebook."

Watts said the incident was posted on Facebook before school administrators even knew all the details yet, saying they would have immediately contacted Butts' parents once they learned of what happened.

"It stung. It went white and started stinging," Bradley Butts said when describing the incident.

Bradley Butts said he was in the hallway Tuesday morning when it happened.

"This girl walked by and I kind of brushed up on her," Bradley Butts said. "[Shadden] was like I need to keep my hands to myself. I turned fully around and she just grabbed me and smacked me."

According to the incident report filed with the Monroe County Sheriff's office, Shadden admitted that she smacked Bradley Butts after he mouthed off her.

The school said Shadden has more than 40 years of experience as a teacher and has spent almost 20 years at Sweetwater High School.

"She's always been like a good teacher and stuff but I guess she snapped," Bradley Butts said.

"I hope they pull her license," Antonio Butts said. "I hope she loses her pension. She ought to lose her job. She ought to lose everything."

Shadden spoke to 6 News by phone but did not want to speak on camera.

Shadden said she did slap Butts and said it was after he used foul language against her, though she didn't recall his exact words.

Shadden said she regretted slapping the teen and said that she loves teaching, especially literature.
