Knox Co., Ky. vehicle break-in suspect shot dead by neighbor


HEIDRICK, Ky. (WATE) - A man suspected of breaking into a vehicle at a home in Knox County, Ky. early Friday morning was shot dead after an altercation with the homeowner and a neighbor.

A preliminary investigation by the Knox County Sheriff's Office and Kentucky State Police indicates Randy Shane Mayberry, 30, of Barbourville, had been seen breaking into a vehicle at a residents on Morris Lane in Heidrick.

A neighbor called 911 and the homeowner to inform him of the incident.

Both the neighbor and homeowner retrieved their personal guns and approached Mayberry, who ran away.

A short distance later, an altercation took place between the neighbor and MAyberry. A shot was fired by the neighbor, striking Mayberry.

Mayberry was taken to the Knox County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body has been sent for an autopsy.

No arrests have been made. The case is still under investigation. The names of the homeowner and neighbor have not been released.
