KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Northwest Knoxville massage parlor was shut down Monday under the state nuisance law after a Knoxville Police Department investigation revealed organized prostitution within the business.

Smile Spa, 5833 Clinton Highway #201, was ordered closed by Judge Steve Sword.

"Mostly it was men," said Sarah Kroomah, who owns K. African Hair Braiding, housed in the same building. She says the place was always busy,

"I had seen a lot of cars, but figured it was customers at the spa," said Jaffar Alabadi, who owns Sunrise Auto Sales next door.

While businesses did not have too much to say about what criminal activity may have been going on at the business, residents living in the area did.

"There's a spa, it's a shady spa. It's a prostitution ring. I was like, I don't want it around here," said Don Spencer, about what he heard from people in the area. He lives in the neighborhood behind the spa.

Court documents detail four separate incidents between May and September in which an undercover officer was offered sexual acts during a massage in exchange for money. During three of those incidents, a female employee allegedly retrieved a prophylactic from within the business as part of the offer.

Smile Spa is located only 1.5 miles from Norwood Elementary School.

The property will remain closed until further notice.

"It's great. That's great. I hope it remains shut down," Spencer said.

The nuisance injunction marks the 37th closure by the Knoxville Police Department and the District Attorney's office, and the fourth closure of a massage parlor for prostitution.
