GREENEVILLE (WATE) - A South Greene High School student was airlifted to the hospital Tuesday morning after an altercation between students ended in a stabbing.

Director of Schools Vickie Kirk says the fight began in the hallway outside the lunchroom just before school started at 8 a.m.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office says a 15-year-old male student was stabbed multiple times by a 16-year-old boy while sitting in the cafeteria area.

A female student intervened and subdued the suspect until a teacher and, ultimately, law enforcement officers came.

Wings Air Rescue flew the victim to the hospital and the suspect was immediately taken into custody. The victim is currently listed in stable condition.

The school was briefly put on lockdown and all students were taken to the gymnasium.

"The students, faculty and staff at South Greene did a marvelous job of handling the situation," said Kirk. "It was a difficult situation for them, but they did what they were supposed to do. They took care of the students. As soon as it was contained, they removed the students from the cafeteria and hallways into the gym, and locked the school down."

Classes resumed as scheduled a short time later.

About 500 students attend the school, which does not have metal detectors.

A security officer was outside as students were getting off the school buses when the stabbing happened.

The suspect has been charged with attempted first degree murder and will be held in police custody until his first scheduled court appearance on Friday, Sept. 27.
