Knoxville sunglasses maker to close, 310 jobs lost

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Sunglasses maker Luxottica is closing its Knoxville manufacturing facility, 4716 Middle Creek Lane, resulting in the loss of 310 jobs.

The company says it made the decision after a recent efficiency review.

Many of the workers will be laid off on November 19, while some will be laid off during the following two weeks.

89 percent of the workforce is predicted to be put on administrative leave beginning October 19.

Some workers may be offered the option of transferring to another location in the company, but Luxottica official don't know which workers, if any.

The company says it is providing support programs to help impacted employees through this transition.

Luxottica closed its facility on Anderson Road in 2009, combining it with the Middle Creek Lane plant. 76 jobs were lost in the consolidation.

Luxottica makes prescription frames and sunglasses for such brands as LensCrafters and Pearle Vision. It also manages glasses at Sunglass Hut locations worldwide.
