MARYVILLE (WATE) - The Blount County Sheriff's Office is searching for a suspect accused of attempting to abduct a 12-year-old girl during a volleyball game at William Blount High School Tuesday night.

Sheriff James Berrong says the girl told deputies she was in a stairwell at the school around 8 p.m. when a man grabbed her and tried to take the girl down the stairs.

6 News sat down with the girl's mother, who didn't want to give her full name for fear of her family's safety. The Blount County mother of two says she's simply shaken after she says her daughter was assaulted in a stairwell.

"She was gone too long so I was going to go check on her and here she came up running. I could tell by the look on her face something is not right she was petrified," said the girl's mother.

The girl's mother adds they were watching a volleyball game and her 12-year-old had left to use the restroom.

"He just grabbed her by her left arm and tried to pull her and when she hit him he took off running," she said.

The Blount County Sheriff's Office believes that man got into a black sedan driven by someone else. William Blount High School does have security cameras and investigators are looking for anything that may be out of the ordinary.

The girl's mother says she's thanking God for her daughter's quick thinking, "Not everybody is that brave to react that quick and I think the only reason why she's still here is that she did react very quickly."

Now, she's warning other parents about this close call. "You can only be so safe. I do believe that the community needs to know that this did happen and by their choice they can take on their own actions to make sure their kids are safe," she added.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early-to-mid 30s, standing 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, with short brown hair, and an average build. He was said to be wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office Crime Hotline at (865) 273-5200 or leave information at the Text-a-Tip link on the sheriff's office website.
