CARYVILLE (WATE) - One person has died after a boating accident at Cove Lake State Park in Caryville.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says James Hamblin, 50, from Hamilton, Ohio, drowned after falling overboard from a small jon-boat around 9 a.m. Friday morning.

Officers say Hamblin and LaFollette resident Bill Roddy had rented the boat from the park and were fishing at the time of the accident.

Hamblin was standing up when he fell, causing he and Roddy to both fall overboard. Roddy was able to swim back to the boat, but Hamblin was unable to make it to safety.

Roddy paddled the boat to the road where he flagged down a passing motorist to ask for help.

A diver with the LaFollette Rescue Squad discovered Hamblin's body about an hour later.

The boat was equipped with life jackets, but authorities say neither man was wearing one.

An autopsy has been requested.
