Knox County Detention Facility officer arrested for stealing from inmates

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knox County Sheriff's Office property officer was arrested Friday afternoon, accused of stealing jewelry from inmate property bags at the Knox County Detention Facility.

Investigators say Michael Sweat, 19, stole jewelry from property bags belonging to inmates on Sept. 20 and 21, and then pawned the jewelry at Kell's Gold Exchange for $1,130.

The investigation was triggered when a staff member released property to an an inmate who discovered items were missing and the bag had been tampered with.

Sweat was hired in November 2012 and was considered on probation until his first year anniversary.

He was released from the department and immediately taken into custody on $4,000 bond.

All items taken were recovered from Kell's and will be returned to their proper owners.
