KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett hosted the 7th Annual Senior Appreciation Picnic Friday at John Tarleton Park.

Seniors were able to take advantage of lunch, live music and a mini-health picnic, all without charge.

Mayor Burchett said he feels it's important to make Knox County's seniors feel special.

"It's just a day to show appreciation to our seniors and, you know, they built this country," said Mayor Burchett. "I just want to show our appreciation to these folks and there's no big push on. They can have a good meal and some great fellowship."

Mayor Burchett also announced he has formed a team for this year's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to benefit breast cancer research.

The race is scheduled for October 26 at World's Fair Park. Mayor Burchett asks for anyone wishing to donate to "Team Burchett" to go to the Komen Race for the Cure website.
