SPRING HILL (WATE) - Tea party group Beat Lamar and several other tea party groups announced Monday they are supporting State Rep. Joe Carr for the Republican nomination in the 2014 U.S. Senate race.

Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of the group, said Carr was vetted at five Beat Lamar events across the state, and emerged as the unanimous choice among the tea party co-sponsors of each event.

Leahy says Coalition for a Constitutional Senate, an informal coalition of 63 Tea Party and Liberty groups throughout Tennessee is also expected to issue a statement in support of Carr.

Carr announced he would run against incumbent Lamar Alexander last month for the 2014 U.S. Senate Republican nomination.

At the time, Carr admitted a race against Alexander will be a challenge, given Alexander's extensive history of public service.

Alexander has been under fire from conservative groups statewide for his support for a bill giving a pathway for citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
