ALCOA (WATE) - An airplane was forced to make an emergency landing Tuesday night at McGhee Tyson Airport.

Airport spokesperson Becky Huckaby says ExpressJet Flight 4293, which was operating as United Express, landed safely just after 6:30 p.m.

Huckaby says the airport was alerted that the flight had a level two situation, which means it was experiencing an issue and needed to land at the closest airport as a precaution.

Allison Curtin with ExpressJet Airlines told 6 News smoke in the flight deck caused the plane to make an emergency landing.

Curtin says the plane left from Columbia, South Carolina, and was on its way to Chicago, Illinois.

All 28 passengers on the plane board another flight to reach their destination.
