GATLINBURG (WATE) – Weddings in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are on hold because of the shutdown.

Couples who planned to tie the knot there are scrambling to find a back-up plan.

Mississippi resident Frank Sample and his fiancé planned for months and spent a lot of money on their dream wedding.

"Of course it's upsetting to us. It's an inconvenience. We don't know what the outcome will be," Sample said.

Eric Gebhart runs New Beginnings Photography, where he offers couples a variety of complete wedding packages in the park.

"The phone started ringing at around 7:30 this morning with brides calling and asking what would happen with their wedding that were planned in the park. I've gotten e-mails also. I've had my phone to my ear all day long," Gebhart said. He's been looking for scenic locations that can serve as a substitute.

"I've got to be prepares for the worst. October is the busiest month of the year. I checked the park calendar this morning, and there were over 50 weddings scheduled in the park," Gebhart added.

"Best scenario is that Congress and the White House can settle this issue that got us into this dilemma," Sample said.

People reserving the park for a wedding or a special event pay a fee.

It's not clear yet if that money will be refunded.

Also there are several people who elope and get married in the park. Those plans are usually made in the last minute.
