Knox County mayor organizes 'Race for the Cure' team


KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett is organizing a team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K run/walk on Oct. 26. The mayor announced he was forming "Team Burchett" during the Senior Appreciation Day picnic on Sept. 27.

Mayor Burchett and Knox County Senior Services are also teaming up with Independent Insurance Consultants to offer five opportunities to register for "Team Burchett" during the week of October 14 to 18.

At those events, those participating as part of "Team Burchett" can register for a reduced rate of $30. In addition to the official Komen T-shirt and race bib, the first 100 participants will also receive a "Team Burchett" T-shirt.

The mayor will also declare the week of October 14 through 18 Breast Cancer Awareness Week at a "Survivor Celebration" kickoff event at the Carter Senior Center.

Survivor Celebration events:

  • Monday, October 14 - Carter Senior Center, 9040 Asheville Highway, 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 15 - Halls Senior Center, 4405 Crippen Road, 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 16 - Strang Senior Center, 109 Lovell Heights Road, 1 to 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 17 - South Knox Senior Center, 6729 Martel Lane, Noon to 1 p.m.
  • Friday, October 18 - Corryton Senior Center, 9331 Davis Drive, 11 a.m. to noon.

Jane Bannon, executive director of Susan G. Komen Knoxville, will be the guest speaker at each event.

In addition, people can register for "Team Burchett" online at the full rate of $40.
