WIC to continue in Tennessee through end of October

NASHVILLE (WATE) - Tennessee's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is funded through the end of October, despite the government shutdown.

Officials with the program say they have enough carry-forward funding to keep the program running as normal through the end of the month.

They say Tennessee WIC vendors should continue accepting vouchers and will be notified by the Tennessee Department of Health if they are to make any change in operation.

Federal funding for the program was cut off last week when Congress failed to pass a budget bill for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

WIC provides supplemental food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five.
