KNOXVILLE (WATE) - If you want to save money at the grocery store, using coupons is one way. Another is buying store brand products.

Christy from South Knoxville asks, "I am usually drawn to national brands. Do store brand products have the same quality as national brands?"

Habit and familiarity are reasons consumers have traditionally been drawn to national brands.

While at one time grocery store brands carried a stigma with no frills packaging, today they are the stars of grocery store shelves and refrigerated cases.

According to Nielsen researchers, sales of store brands grew 18 percent over the last three years.  That's more than twice the rate of growth for national brands at nearly 8 percent.

Market research company Mintel reports that shoppers say store brand quality has improved. Around 44 percent of those who responded to a survey believe store brand products are of better quality today than they were five years ago.

More and more store brands are appearing on shelves at supermarkets, but many people wonder why they are there, and who makes them.

Store brands have become important to retail chains because of value. They can provide customers with high quality products at a good price.

To produce their products, supermarkets turn to store brand manufacturers and make it clear that high quality, from packaging and labeling to the final product itself, is the number one requirement.

Remember this: store brands are not necessarily cheaper, they are just less expensive to market than national brands are, and that's good news for consumers.
