Front Street Baptist Church asks for help paying for transporting victims after bus crash

STATESVILLE, N.C. (WATE) - Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville, N.C. is asking for donations to help pay for non-emergency transportation to bring home surviving victims of last week's deadly church bus crash from University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Eight people were killed when a bus tire malfunctioned on Interstate 40 in Jefferson County on October 2, causing the driver to lose control. The bus crossed the median, striking a tractor trailer and an SUV. The tractor trailer burst into flames and the bus flipped on its side.

Six church members were killed in the crash. Twelve others were injured, nine of which are still in the hospital.

The church posted on its Facebook page that it needs help paying to transport the surviving victims by ambulance from Knoxville to rehab facilities in Statesville as they are released from the hospital.

The church says the need is urgent because non-emergency transportation is not covered by medical insurance.

Anyone who wishes to donate is asked to email or call (704) 872-7623.
