KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A representative for Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett says he does not intend to run in the U.S. Senate primary against incumbent Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Burchett told 6 News in July he was approached by state conservatives to challenge Sen. Lamar Alexander in his 2014 reelection bid. At the time, Burchett admitted a Senate run would be difficult.

State Sen. Joe Carr announced his intention to run against Alexander in August. Carr has won the support of several Tennessee tea party groups.

A poll paid for by Alexander in August showed voters preferred Alexander over both Carr and Burchett.
