Gas prices dropped below $3 for a gallon of regular gasoline at several stations in Rutherford County Friday morning.
Four local gas stations, two in La Vergne and two in Smyrna, offered the lower price, nearly $0.25 cheaper than the Nashville-area average of $3.23 per gallon.
According the U.S. Energy Information Administration, transportation fuel prices dropped $0.18 in September. The price per gallon is expected to average $3.34 in the fourth quarter of 2013.
AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge reflects those same numbers, showing the national average for a gallon of regular at $3.35, down $0.21 in the last month. Statewide, the average is $3.16, down $0.19 in a month's time.
Not much is being said about the dip in prices, as analysts begin to focus on winter heating fuels. Natural gas, propane, and electricity costs are expected to go up, 13%, 9%, and 2% respectively, between October 1 and March 31.
It's not clear how long gas prices will remain on the downward slope.
Gas stations offering a gallon of regular at $2.99 include Kroger at 463 Sam Ridley Parkway and Home Depot at 553 President Place, in Smyrna, and Kroger at 5145 Murfreesboro Road and Murphy USA at 584 Enon Springs Road in La Vergne.
