Greene County sheriff searches for ATM vandals, may be connected to scheme

MOSHEIM (WATE) - Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns says his department is looking for whoever vandalized two bank ATMs with super glue in what may be a scheme to obtain debit cards and account information.

The sheriff says the machines at the Consumer Credit Union and First Tennessee Bank had super glue poured into the keypads sometime Thursday night..

Sheriff Burns says the incidents may be related to a scheme to fraudulently obtain debit cards and information. In several other incidents nationwide, the suspects poured glue on the cancel and clear buttons to prevent patrons from canceling their transactions.

On some machines, this prevents the ATM from ejecting the debit card. While the unsuspecting patron goes for help, the suspect moves in, waits for the machine to eject the card due to inactivity, and takes off with the card.

Sheriff Burns says the suspect in Thursday's incidents is a white male driving a white Toyota Tacoma extended cab pickup truck.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Greene County Sheriff's Department at (423) 798-1800.
