KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A woman was struck and seriously injured by a car early Sunday as she crossed a street in Knoxville's Old City. The vehicle left the scene.

Knoxville police say Heather House was walking in a crosswalk near 106 Central Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when she was hit by a car police say was driven by Dalton Phillip Powell, 21.

A witness and the victim provided a description of the car, a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis. It continued on Central Avenue after striking the woman.

An officer working in that area saw the suspect and vehicle a short time later on James White Parkway.

Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol on Powell's person, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a staggered gait.

Powell was taken into custody and now faces several charges including vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident, DUI, and driving while suspended.

House is in UT Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
