TELLICO PLAINS (WATE) - The death of a Tellico Plains man is being treated as a homicide.

Investigators say Michael Strickland, 41, was found shot to death in the driveway of his mechanic shop, which is located near his home on Fairview Road, in the middle of the day on Friday.

His wife, who did not want to appear on camera, said she was not home when her husband was killed. She said he was self employed and had grown up in the area.

She says they had been married for 10 years, and that Strickland had a 12-year-old son.

People who live in the area were surprised to hear about Strickland's murder.

"It was kind of disturbing to find out something like that happened, right next to your door," said neighbor Mike Tucker.

Neighbors say Strickland was a good person.

"He's friendly," said neighbor Koy Clay. "He's a good guy."

"I knew him, but not all that well," said Tucker. "I'd been down there. I'd seen him a couple of times."

The sheriff says they are working hard on solving this case.

"[We are] developing different things that went on," said Monroe County sheriff Bill Bivens, "Trying to piece together a puzzle of all that had accord prior to his death."

Neighbors say it is a little frightening knowing a murderer is on the loose.

"I'm going to make sure the doors are locked," said Tucker.

"I don't understand why someone would do something like that for no reason," said Clay. "It had to be some kind of reason for this. It don't make sense."

The sheriff is asking everyone to be vigilant until they make an arrest.

"I would say be cautious of anybody, especially a stranger, someone you don't know," said Sheriff Bivens.

The sheriff says they had never been called out to the Strickland's home before.

He says they are working with the  Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the district attorney's office to get this case solved.

If you have any information on the murder of Michael Strickland you are asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff's office at 423-442-3911.
