KNOXVILLE (WATE) -  A Knox County child care center is temporarily closing its doors after two confirmed cases of viral meningitis.

Officials at Mudpies & Music on Clinton Highway say they will deep clean for the rest of the week to make sure no more children get sick.

The owner says they wanted parents to be aware of the situation.

The Knox County Health Department says it is investigating a total of five cases of viral meningitis from just the past few days.

"Some kinds of meningitis are pretty easily spread, but fortunately meningitis is a pretty rare disease, and some people who get exposed won't get sick, and some people will," said KCHD Director Dr. Martha Buchanan.

Health officials say washing your hands is the easiest way to protect yourself against meningitis.
