MARYVILLE (WATE) - Officials say a Blount County elementary school teacher who resigned Tuesday after being arrested for child pornography also taught for a time in Knox County.

Deputies say John Lynn, 38, taught fourth grade at Prospect Elementary in Seymour. He was taken into custody Monday night at his home in Alcoa. Officials say pornographic images and videos of children were found on Lynn's computer.

While Blount County Schools wouldn't say whether Lynn had a background test or if he passed, it is standard procedure. However, Lynn did not have a criminal record in Blount County or in Knox County, where he taught fifth grade last year at Shannondale Elementary.

Parents at Shannondale didn't want to appear camera, but told 6 News that in addition to being a teacher there last year, Lynn was also a chaperone on the fifth grade trip to Washington, DC.

The news of his arrest left many concerned parents with difficult conversations to have with their kids, including explaining what child pornography is.

"Oh, it scared me," said Tonya Cowden, a parent at Prospect Elementary.

She said the news brought horrible thoughts to her mind.

"Like what he's thinking when he's with those kids, if he's ever alone with them and it just makes me sick," Cowden said.

The Blount County Sheriff's Office says there's no indication the children in the pornography they found on Lynn's home computer are local. They say the pictures and video were downloaded from the Internet.

"I was very surprised. I didn't have any idea. I was shocked," said Debbi Jones, who has two grandchildren at Prospect. "They took care of it real fast so I was just thankful for that.

6 News also spoke to associate pastor David Frahme at East Maryville Baptist Church where Lynn was a member and a volunteer with the children's ministry. Frahme said Lynn will not be allowed back at the church.

Lynn has been charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a minor for possession of child pornography and one count of aggravated sexual exploitation of minor for distribution of child pornography. He's in jail on a $75,000 bond.
