MADISONVILLE (WATE) –A Madisonville boy talks about surviving a shark attack while on vacation with his family.

Zac Standridge, 12,  was swimming off the beach in Destin, Florida around 3:30 pm on October 5. This was shortly after the Standridge's arrived at their vacation condo.

Witnesses said the shark was about four feet long.

Zac is back home in Madisonville and attending school as well. His right arm is bandaged up with roughly 120 stitches. He has 10 weeks of physical therapy ahead of him.

"Right here, and here," Zac said, showing us where he was wounded.

"He has multiple bites in different directions," said Katie Standridge, his mother.

It was meant to be a fun five day trip to Florida for Fall break. Zac says he was playing in the waves with his cousin.

"I would squat down and jump over the waves. I squatted down and blinked. It happened in five seconds," Zac said, describing how quickly he was bitten. "When I opened my eyes, I saw the fin flipping away, I just looked at it," he added.

The 12-year-old was rushed to the hospital and into surgery. Doctors told his mother he'd been bitten at least twice.

"I didn't feel anything because it happened so fast," Zac said.

"We have an amazing God and he's been watching over him ever since it happened," said Katie Standridge.

Despite the dramatic turn of events, the Standridge's did get a little bit of a vacation in before they left.

Zac says the incident hasn't made him afraid of the ocean.

His family is hoping for an uneventful beach vacation down the road.

"But yes, we'll definitely be going back," Katie Standridge said.

The family says the boys were not very deep in the water at all.

They were told it may have been a bull shark that attacked Zac, but they really don't know.
