KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Police arrested a suspect Thursday morning after a man was killed in a shooting in Knoxville late Wednesday night.

James Hudgins, 47, was arrested without incident.

The Knoxville Police Department responded to a shooting call just before 11 p.m. at a home located on the 300 block of East Churchwell Avenue.

Investigators say they're working closely with witnesses and still gathering evidence. Because of that, they were able to identify their suspect quickly.

The victim's 16-year-old son spoke with 6 News Thursday, saying he lived with his father and this is simply a devastating loss for their family.

A small bouquet of flowers was resting on the front porch Thursday where officers found Larry Joe Turner II, 43, dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Neighbors say they're simply shocked.

"My husband and I were sitting on the couch, and I heard four real quick, sounded like fireworks. but my husband said it was in fact gunshots. and I knew it was close. But I didn't realize it was just right here," said neighbor Lisa Alfrey.

Turner was described as a helpful, wonderful father, and was part of a close knit family. Neighbors are asking why this deadly shooting had to happen.

"What could happen to make somebody so angry to make them shoot and that many times shoot to kill," added Alfrey.

Investigators say Hudgins and Turner may have known each other.

"All we're going to say at this point is that it was a domestic related incident and there was obviously some type of relationship there and that played a role in the shooting," said Darrell DeBusk with the Knoxville Police Department.

KPD says they know the motive behind this deadly shooting, but they're not releasing that information. Police say Hudgins does have a criminal record.

"He was arrested by the [Knox County] sheriff's department a couple years ago. I think it was a drug charge and a weapon charge," added DeBusk.

Neighbors say after this shooting, they hope to see a bigger police presence especially at night.

"Makes me feel unsafe," said Alfrey.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine how many times Turner was shot.

Hudgins is now in jail facing first degree murder charges.

He was taken to the Knox County Detention Facility Thursday morning on a $900,000 bond.
