Beale Street gets dozens of cameras for security

MEMPHIS (AP) - City officials are hoping to increase security on Beale Street with the addition of dozens of cameras.

Jon Shivers with Performa Entertainment, which manages the historic district, told WMC-TV that there are now about 55 cameras on Beale Street.

Shivers says the cameras are intended to discourage crime and other disturbances, but also have a record if they occur. Police have responded to a number of fights in the area in recent months.

"We'll have security guards and personnel actually watching the cameras on a day and nightly basis to kind of survey the whole street and alley ways," Shivers said.

Last week, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. said he wants to add three blocks to the district and take the street to the Mississippi River. He says the current boundaries of the entertainment section of Beale Street are too constrictive.

The City of Memphis will have control of Beale Street within two months and that's when the city will get to work.
