Recycling event to be held in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - More than a dozen environmental organizations are attending Knox County's 2013 America Recycles Day event next weekend to help residents learn where, how and why to recycle.

The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Krutch Park Extension across from the Regal Riviera Stadium 8 movie theater on Gay Street. The theme for this year's event is "America Recycles and You Can Too!"

Giveaways, games and activities are planned, including Keep Knoxville Beautiful's recycled art exhibit where participants can create and view artwork made of recycled goods.

Attendees can bring old or unwanted documents to be confidentially shredded and recycled. There is no limit on how many documents residents can bring.

The Knoxville Police Department, Knox County Solid Waste, Knox County Health Department, and others from the East Tennessee Regional Medication Collection Coalition will collect unwanted over the counter prescription medication for proper disposal. The plastic bottles will also be recycled.

The Knoxville Recycling Coalition will also be giving away recycle bins and the City of Knoxville Solid Waste Office will be conducting a used mercury thermometer exchange.
