KNOXVILLE (WATE) - As the temperatures get colder, it is very important to make sure your heater is working properly at your home. Experts 6 News spoke with say not maintaining your heater may cost you.

Heating experts say to avoid those costly repairs, it is important to get your heating unit checked at least once a year.      

A serviceman with Pioneer Heating and Air Conditioning was out at L.T. Hansard's home Tuesday in the Halls community.

Hansard says it is important for him to have a properly working heating unit.

"My wife has arthritis, and the temperature and everything hurts her if it gets too cool," he said.

Gordy Noe, the president of Pioneer, says this time of the year they get very busy.

"One of the calls we've had a lot of this week already, I had two this morning, was the burning smell," said Noe. "Everyone's afraid their units on fire."    

Noe says that smell is just lint burning off the heaters and that the smell should not last long.

He says along with getting your heating unit inspected each year, it is also important to keep a close eye on your utility bill to keep your unit working properly.

"If your utility bill starts to change a lot you probably have something that's happening gradually," he said.

Noe says with proper maintenance, heating units should last homeowners for several years.

Hansard hopes his will last several years as well.

"I usually have them come over and check in the fall of the year," said Hansard. "It works fine."

The folks over at Pioneer says a maintenance checks usually take about an hour and a half.
