KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Tennessee's First Lady Chrissy Haslam attended a fundraiser for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

The program sends age-appropriate books to children up to the age of 5 to promote reading as a family and in the home.

Haslam said the program is important because children are expected to come to kindergarten ready for reading and most fall behind in reading by the third grade.

"Many of them are coming to kindergarten not prepared to read and because they haven't been read to. They haven't heard language and sentence structure. They haven't had books read to them. This is the perfect program to help with that problem," Haslam said.

The Imagination Library is a nationwide program and has affiliates all over the country. The Knoxville branch is at the Knoxville Public Library and can be contacted through their website
