Chemistry experiment blamed for fire at Oak Ridge High School

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - Fire crews responded to a fire in a garbage can Friday night at Oak Ridge High School.

According to the Oak Ridge Fire Department, firefighters responded to the scene just before 9 p.m.

Officials say crews were informed by the janitorial staff upon arrival that there was an active fire in a chemistry classroom and that the room was filled with smoke. Firefighters were able to locate the fire in a fire resistant wastepaper container a short time later.

The fire was extinguished with a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

The fire was determined to be caused by an accidental reaction to waste products from a chemistry experiment earlier that evening.

No injuries or damage to the school was reported.
