KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Officers responding to a shots fired call in North Knoxville Sunday night discovered a man's body in the front yard of an apartment complex.
The man, identified as John Edward Smith, 34, was found deceased in the front yard of 1900 Dutch Valley Drive, apartment 16 around 11 p.m. Officers say he had been shot more than once.
According to witnesses and evidence recovered from the scene, the shooting occurred during a drug deal.
Smith has a lengthy criminal record including weapons, theft and drug charges. He has been taken to the forensic center for an autopsy.
Neighbors in the apartment complex who witnessed the aftermath said it left them worried.
"It really scares me, you know. I've got three children. I take care of them by myself. And I'm really wanting to move, because you never know. The people could come back," said Stacy Tolliver.
Tolliver said she tried to comfort Smith's 8-year-old daughter who witnessed the shooting. She also said Smith had several surveillance cameras which may have taken images of the suspect.
Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses, review evidence recovered from the scene and determine the suspect's identity.
