KNOXVILLE (WATE) - One person was killed in a four-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Alcoa Highway that tied up traffic for several hours.

The crash was reported around noon in the southbound lanes near Ginn Drive.

A preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a Subaru Impreza crossed both southbound lanes of Alcoa Highway and for an unknown reason, stopped in the inside northbound lane.

The Subaru was hit by a northbound Chevrolet Impala, causing the Subaru to go up and over the median, crashing head-on into southbound Audi A4.

The Audi spun around and into the path of a southbound GMC Arcadia which also crashed into the Audi.

The driver of the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Audi were taken to UT Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the Impala was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The drive of the Arcadia refused medical treatment.

The crash caused several lanes of traffic to be closed, but all lanes were reopened just before 4 p.m.
