WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. -

The westbound lanes of State Route 840 were closed for several hours Tuesday morning after a tractor trailer overturned, spilling fuel onto the roadway.

The accident occurred around 2:20 a.m. near mile marker 16 between Highway 46 and Natchez Trace Parkway in Williamson County.

Close to 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled across the roadway after the truck careened into a guardrail and then flipped.

The guardrail reportedly peeled the top off the trailer, causing the cargo to spill as well.  The truck was carrying auto parts for a manufacturing plant.

The driver was uninjured.  Police say he fell asleep at the wheel.

Westbound traffic was affected with the roadway closed. Motorists were diverted to Carters Creek Pike at exit 16.

The scene was cleared and highway reopened around 10:15 a.m.
