KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Confusion about the Affordable Care Act, or more commonly known as "Obamacare," has opened the door for lots of con artists.

Susan from Madisonville writes, "I have heard that navigators are calling people about Obamacare. That doesn't sound right."

Under the Affordable Care Act, navigators have been trained to help people apply for insurance coverage.

They help when you call asking for assistance. Navigators will not initiate the call.

However, there have been reports of people claiming to be navigators calling low-income families and even seniors who are on Medicare, trying to get them to divulge personal information.

"They're telling them they're one of the first people to get an Affordable Care Act card, and there is no card," said Jerry Tipton.

Tipton, with the Better Business Bureau, says no one will call you regarding Obamacare. He says fraudsters are apparently taking advantage of the confusion and delays with the Affordable Care Act.

"It makes people make decisions that they would not normally make," he said. "They want personal information. Your bank account and social security numbers. The thing is, if it really is the government, they issued your Social Security card. They don't need your Social Security card information. Don't every give that information to anybody who calls you unsolicited."

If you inadvertently divulge personal information to any Affordable Care Act con man, inform your bank and credit card providers immediately.

Also, if someone claiming to be with Obamacare or another federal programs asks you to wire money or load funds unto a prepaid card, it's a scam.
