KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Downtown Knoxville is getting a new, off-Broadway style theatre.

The Flying Anvil Theatre will open in its new home November 1 in the renovated Buick dealership on North Gay Street. The theatre group formed in 2011.

The building they chose provides an intimate and flexible performance space. The theatre's first production is called "Venus in Fur" and opening night is Friday, November 1.

The group's Executive Producer, Staci Swedeen, hopes Flying Anvil will fill a niche in Knoxville's theater scene.

"We're looking to be the off Broadway of Knoxville. If Clarence Brown was considered the Broadway. They do great work there and fantastic sets and all that kind of stuff. And there's a lot of smaller theatres in Knoxville and we'd like to be just in the middle. The off-Broadway doing a little edgier work, a little more unusual work. Plays perhaps that wouldn't be seen in this area," Swedeen said.
