Jones: Monumental academic news for UT football

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Butch Jones is taking aim at schools who target Tennessee football for once-lagging academic standards.

"That's in the past. That's history," Jones said while announcing scores he received from the NCAA that show a turnaround in academic progress at UT.

Jones said Academic Progress Report (APR) numbers for the 2013 spring semester show Tennessee football scored a perfect 1000.

The overall score for Tennessee football is 962, said the UT head coach.

Jones said the numbers will be released by the NCAA next spring, but he wanted to announce them now in an effort to stem negative recruiting by other schools.

"This is an issue since we walked in here together as a coaching staff that our opponents have used against us in the recruitment process'" Jones said.

"There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to be able to come before you today to say, that's in the past, that's history and we continue to move forward."

Tennessee was facing the possibility of NCAA punishment-- including postseason bans and scholarship reductions-- based on previous substandard scores.
