KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A chain of crashes involving two cars and two semi-trucks on Interstate 40 near Strawberry Plains sent one person to the hospital Thursday morning.

The Knoxville Police Department says the wreck happened around 5:15 a.m. on I-40 westbound between Midway Road and Strawberry Plains Pike.

Officials say the accident started with one car running into the back of another vehicle. The automobile struck from behind lost control and spun out into the median on the left side of the roadway.

The driver and passenger in the second car left their vehicle on the road without its lights on and went to the other car.

A semi-tractor carrying two trailers struck the abandoned vehicle in the roadway. The double semi broke apart and ran off onto the right shoulder.

At the same time, a second semi-trailer that was behind the double trailer attempted to stop. The second semi-trailer jackknifed and rolled over onto the right shoulder of the roadway.

The driver of the double semi was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with minor injuries.

The drivers of the second semi-trailer and vehicle in the median were not injured.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle left in the roadway fled the scene. Officials are searching for them.

All westbound lanes of I-40 reopened shortly before noon, but the shoulder remained closed as TDOT and crews transfer cargo from the scene.

Two westbound lanes will be closed again Thursday night around 6 p.m. for removal of the two semis from the scene. Police say to expect delays during this time.
