Public invited to attend funeral procession for Knoxville police officer killed in crash

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Funeral arrangements have been made for a Knoxville police officer killed in a motorcycle crash in Sevier County Monday during his off-hours. The public is invited to show their support during the procession.

The service for Officer David Munson will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 at Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church, 4615 Asheville Highway.

Interment will follow in Atchleys's Seymour Memory Gardens, 122 Peacock Court in Seymour.

The procession is expected to leave the church around 12:15 p.m. and will take the following route:

  • West on Magnolia Avenue to Hall of Fame Drive
  • South on Hall of Fame to Howard Baker Jr. Drive
  • East on Howard Baker Jr. Drive to Hill Avenue
  • South on Hill then across the South Knox Bridge to Moody Avenue
  • West on Moody to Chapman Highway
  • South on Chapman Highway to grave site

Members of the community are welcome to show their support during the procession. Knoxville Police Department employees who are unable to attend the service will show their support as the procession passes by the safety building. 

The Knoxville Fire Department will display the American Flag from their ladder trucks behind the safety building on Hill Avenue. 

Traffic will be briefly stopped to allow the passing of the procession.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol accident report, Munson was driving his 2011 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on State Highway 338/Douglas Dam Road Monday night when he lost control of the motorcycle, ran off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
