NEWPORT (WATE) – Cocke County's sheriff says what started out as an accidental shooting investigation is now a homicide investigation.

Richard Lane, 42, was shot at his Newport home on Tuesday.

His wife, Missy Lane, told deputies she was handing him a 38-caliber Rossi revolver when the gun accidentally went off. Richard Lane was hit in the chest.

His body was taken to UT Medical Center for an autopsy.

Sheriff Armando Fontes says this incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

The sheriff had previously said Missy Lane would undergo a polygraph test. She has not been charged at this time.
