One person was killed after three semi-trucks were involved in a fiery crash on Interstate 40 Friday afternoon.

William Slate, 75, of Virginia, died around 2 p.m. after he was unable to slow his tractor trailer down in traffic, causing a chain reaction of collisions on I-40 in Dickson County near State Route 840.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported traffic either slowed quickly or stopped suddenly when Slate's semi slammed into another semi in front of him.

The driver of the semi, Frank Zupancic, 51, of Maryland, then slammed into another tractor trailer driven by Gary Key, 36, of Mississippi.

Both Zupancic and Key were injured in the crash.  Their conditions were not immediately released.

Slate's tractor trailer burst into flames upon impact.  Interstate cameras provided by the Tennessee Department of Transportation showed smoke billowing from the scene.

The interstate was closed for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
