LAKE CITY (WATE) – People in Lake City may be calling their city Rocky Top before too long. Leaders want to change the name to Rocky Top to liven it up and bring in much needed revenue.

They spent Friday evening marketing the idea to residents at a public meeting.

There used to be a time, decades ago, when Lake City was booming with activity. Buck Wills has lived there for 82 years.

"Back when I was a kid, streets would be full of people walking," Wills said.

Most of those stores are now empty with their doors locked. The prospect of a new name, Rocky Top, and a whole new set of attractions to go with it, makes for an exciting idea.

"There's nothing in Lake City, this will be something," said resident Carol Leach.

Those behind the concept want to create a theme around the name. They're already working on several ideas, like a candy corn company and an amusement park that would go with it.

They'll even have their own characters, like a mascot named Strudel.

"Just like, for instance, Disney World has Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy. We got our own version of that, Strudel," explained Anderson County Commissioner Tim Isbel.

But not everyone's pumped about Rocky Top being home sweet home to me.

"Well we are personally not going to make a lot of money. Our taxes will go way up. They're going to have to put a new sewer system in. The whole town is going to change I think," said resident Jan Kowalski.

The proposal is a lot to take in for long timers like Buck Wills.

"I don't have the least idea. We're hoping for the best you know," Wills said.

City Council will vote on the new name next week. Most of the people attending the public meeting seemed to be for the idea.

If it goes through, Rocky Top will be built in phases over the next few years.
