KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville unveiled plans Monday for the annual Christmas in the City festivities. The event brings a growing number of people to downtown Knoxville each year.

Some say the earlier that Christmas in the City begins, the better it is for business.

"I'm really excited for Christmas. I don't think it's too soon to set up," says Urban Outfitters employee Rebecca Morelli.

A performance inside the Tennessee Theater kicked off this year's theme, "White Christmas in Knoxville."

Across the street, a 38-foot Christmas tree is being built. Also, the ice rink in Market Square is getting set up.

"It's starting to get really fun, and a lot of people are going to start coming down here for shopping and ice skating, and I think it's going to start bringing a lot of business to the square," says Rococo Boutique employee Ashley Wells.

"A lot of this stuff is outdoors, so people won't come out as much if it's cold, but if there's things going on in the square, they'll definitely come out," Morelli says.

"A lot of them will have meals in the restaurants and shop in the stores down here, so it is a great draw for visitors to come into Knoxville," Judith Foltz, the Knoxville special events director, says.

Foltz says about 18,000 skaters came to the ice rink last year. Knoxville's Holidays on Ice opens Friday, November 29, and goes through January 5.

Friday also brings the Regal Celebration of Lights in Krutch Park and the lighting of the city Christmas tree.

The Christmas Parade along Gay Street will be Friday, December 6 at 7 p.m.
