MARYVILLE (WATE) - A large fire at a Blount County junkyard kept firefighters busy Thursday morning.

The blaze started around 10 a.m. at the salvage yard at Murrell Automotive/Recycling at 238 Doc Norton Road.

The owner says workers were draining fuel from a car before it was to be crushed. During a process, a spark caused a nearby pile of tires to ignite.

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control quickly, but two salvaged cars and a Bobcat trailer were burned as a result. The building used to dismount cars was destroyed.

Flames and smoke could be seen for miles. Firefighters say it took a large amount of water to put out the fire because of the heat generated by the burning tires.

No one was injured.
