KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Commissioner and Joint Education Committee member Sam McKenzie said he would like commissioners to learn more about how the teacher evaluation system works following Wednesday's packed school board meeting.

Teachers came out in crowds Wednesday night to voice their frustration with testing and evaluation policies, with some giving emotional pleas for change.

Board of Education member Karen Carson brought up the issue of the school board meeting during Thursday's joint education committee meeting and said it was a sign that the county needs to start listening to what the teachers have to say and start working together.

"I didn't hear anything that surprised me," Carson said about the school board meeting. "I was actually very pleased. I feel like I've been begging teachers to speak up and so I'm very pleased that they did that and now I hope the conversation becomes more of a dialogue."

The committee decided that Knox County Commission will discuss the best way for commissioners to learn more about the evaluations during the next work session. A possibility includes having the education committee give a presentation.
