KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville police saying that 1 person was killed and several more were injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.

According to the Knoxville Police Department, A Saturn Ion was traveling the wrong way on I-40 West near I-275 North and struck a Toyota Scion that was traveling west just past 1 a.m.

That wreck caused a chain reaction, with a Volkswagen Jetta striking the Saturn Ion on the passenger side of the vehicle.

The driver and sole occupant of the Saturn was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of both the Toyota and the Volkswagen were transported to UT Medical Center with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The names of those involved in the crash will be released pending notification of the victims' families.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
