POWELL (WATE) - Veterans Day this year will certainly be one a Knox County second grader will never forget.

His dad is in the military, and after being gone for more than five months, surprised his son Monday at his elementary school.

Eight-year-old Copper Ridge Elementary student Lucas Jansen had no idea that during the school's Veterans Day program Monday morning his greatest wish was about to come true.

In fact, it was waiting just down the hall.

Lucas' dad, Staff Sergeant Michael Jansen, has been in training with the Tennessee Air National Guard in Texas.

"I'm just ready to see everybody and reunite our family. I've missed birthdays, holidays, anniversaries and first days of school," said Staff Sgt. Jansen.

He was thrilled to surprise his second grade son.

He got home just a couple hours before the ceremony, reuniting with his wife a few minutes before he surprised Lucas.

"Oh my gosh. I can't believe you're home. I can't wait for the boys to see you," said Kristy Jansen, Lucas' mom.

Lucas began Skyping with his dad during the school assembly, just like Copper Ridge allows him to do nearly every day.

Then suddenly, what appeared on the Skype screen, walked into the room.

Lucas could hardly believe his eyes.

"It was awesome. Mom said he wasn't going to come back until next month, and here he is," said Lucas Jansen.

Lucas' baby brother Ethan was just as shocked.

"It was awesome and I freaked out," said Ethan Jansen.

Both boys were overjoyed to wrap their arms around dad again.

"So happy! He's been gone for five months. So happy," said Lucas Jansen.

Kristy helped orchestrate the whole thing.

"They've been talking and saying 'I can't wait until Daddy comes home. When's Daddy coming home?'" said Kristy Jansen.

She says this reunion has been a long time coming, and what better day to be reunited with loved ones than on Veterans Day.

Staff Sgt. Jansen will be home this time for a couple of months.

Lucas said the first thing he wanted to do with his dad was take him out to eat for Veterans Day.
