Knox County considering longer school days at two schools

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Director of Schools Dr. Jim McIntyre is considering extending school days for two schools.

Green Magnet Math and Science Academy and Whittle Springs Middle School could see longer days, but the school district says it's just exploring the option, and no decision has been made yet.

The changes would be part of Innovation Matters, an education initiative that is looking into the option in eleven school districts throughout the country.

"We're exploring potentially additional instructional time in two of our schools at Green Academy and Whittle Springs Middle School, but really it's a fairly modest effort and very narrow effort in terms of looking at two individual schools," said Dr. McIntyre.

The school district says an Associated Press report prematurely released information on longer school days, and was misleading in its indication that Knox County was definitely on board.
