World Prematurity Day to raise awareness about premature births Sunday

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Sunday marks the 3rd Annual World Prematurity Day, and the March of Dimes is working to raise awareness about premature births.

This year, Tennessee scored a "C" for the second year in a row with a pre-term birth rate of 12.5 percent.

Jim Ragonese, University of Tennessee Medical Center spokesman and a volunteer with the March of Dimes, spoke about the importance of World Prematurity Day.

He says 15 million babies are born prematurely worldwide every year.

One in eight babies is premature in Tennessee, which is worse than the national average of one in nine. Ragonese says the goal of World Prematurity Day is to reduce these numbers.
