KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Texas man faces federal human smuggling charges after routine traffic stop earlier this week made by a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper in Knox County.

Noe Guevara, 39, of Houston, was spotted driving a Ford Expedition Monday with an improperly displayed registration in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40.

Trooper Jonathan Scott tried to get behind the Expedition, but the driver made several evasive maneuvers.

Scott was eventually able to stop the vehicle and discovered five female and two male passengers from El Salvador, ranging in ages from 11 to 24.

The passengers had no relation to each other or Guevara. Guevara denied knowing them and said he was taking them to The White House to get their "papers."

Upon a search of the vehicle, several Western Union wire receipts were located, and Guevara was found with more than $1,500 on his person. Other indicators were also found that the vehicle had been used in human trafficking.

Trooper Scott notified Homeland Security Investigations who sent agents to the scene and took Guevara into federal custody. Arrangements were made for the passengers to be picked up by family members living in the United States.
