GATLINBURG (WATE) – The elk that made national headlines for sparring with a photographer in the Smokies has been euthanized.

A YouTube video showed James York sitting for seven minutes along the roadside in the Catalooche Valley as the elk continued to head-butt him.

Rangers say the elk kept coming back to that area because people kept feeding it. They believed the elk could become more aggressive and rangers made the decision to put it down.

Park officials want to remind visitors that feeding, touching, willfully approaching wildlife within 50 yards or disturbing animals is illegal.
